Choosing a High Chair

A good high chair makes life so much easier when you are introducing your baby to solid food, and for when they are learning to feed themselves. Choosing the right chair can also make it easier to transition them to joining the family at the dining table.

Finding the right hair chair means finding that ideal balance of safety, comfort, ease of maintenance, versatility, and of course style.

What to look for.

Easy to clean: Feeding time with little kids is very messy! Finding a highchair that is easy to clean can save a lot of time and effort. Look for a chair that doesn’t have too many joins and corners for food to get caught in. It should also be easy to wipe down and pull apart to wash, especially the tray so you can wash it in the sink. Don’t forget the harness either. Make sure this is easy to remove to clean.

Safety: A wide base that is stable and sturdy is important to prevent tipping. The high chair should also have a safety harness that ensures your baby can’t climb out when you’re not looking.

Lightweight: Ideally your high chair should be lightweight and easy to move around the house as needed.

Accessories: The accessories can make the world of difference. If the seat has a hard seat, a cushion (that is washable!) means bub is more likely to enjoy sitting in the chair for longer. Does the high chair come with a tray? Make sure to check this. Other accessories that may be useful are leg extensions for raising the chair to bench height, storage baskets and a newborn seat such as those available with the Evolu 2 from Childhome.

Versatility: Can the high chair be used at the dining table without the tray? This is a great way to help babies and toddlers learn the social side of eating and be part of the family at meal time. Accessories such as leg extensions also provide the option of eating at bench height.

Longevity: A high chair that grows with your child is ideal. Amazingly the Leander High Chair is designed to accompany your child as he or she grows into adulthood. Similarly, the Childhome Evolu 2 High Chair can last until your child is about 6 years’ old. Simply remove the lower part of the legs to create a low chair.
